Guwahati to Tawang by road: route, time and the Sela tunnel
Arunachal5 min read

The short answer
Guwahati to Tawang is roughly 430 to 500 km by road, depending on the route, and is best done over two days with a night in Dirang or Bomdila. The Sela tunnel, opened in March 2024, has made the crossing below Sela Pass more reliable in winter. You need an Inner Line Permit, and an SUV is recommended.
The route
The usual road runs Guwahati to Tezpur, north to Bhalukpong where your Inner Line Permit is checked, then climbs through Tenga, Bomdila and Dirang, over or under Sela, and down past Jang to Tawang.
Do it in two days
Driving straight through takes 11 hours or more on mountain roads, which is too long to be safe or enjoyable. Break the journey in Dirang or Bomdila. The night there also helps you acclimatise before Tawang, at about 3,000 m.
Sela Pass and the Sela tunnel
The Sela tunnel opened on 9 March 2024 and keeps the road open on days when snow or fog would close the pass. Sela Pass itself, at about 4,170 m, is still open to visit for its lake and prayer flags in good weather.
Before you go
- Apply for your Inner Line Permit online before the trip.
- Travel in an SUV with a driver who knows mountain roads.
- Avoid driving after dark.
- Sensitive areas such as Bum La Pass allow only local vehicles, so plan a local taxi for those days.
- March to June and September to November are the best months; winter brings snow, and the monsoon brings landslides.
