How to book a Kaziranga safari: ranges, timings and season

The short answer

Kaziranga's jeep safaris run in four ranges, Central (Kohora), Western (Bagori), Eastern (Agaratoli) and Burapahar, from about October to April. Book ahead through the Assam government's official service or your hotel or tour operator, pick a morning slot, and carry the ID you booked with. Elephant safaris run only in the Central and Western ranges, early in the morning.

When the safaris run

The park closes for the monsoon, when the Brahmaputra floods it. Jeep safaris usually restart in early October in some ranges and across the park from November, with elephant safaris from November; the park closes again around May. The forest department announces the exact dates each year.

Which range to choose

  • Central (Kohora): the most popular and easiest to reach, with plenty of rhinos and elephants.
  • Western (Bagori): open grassland known for rhino and wild buffalo sightings.
  • Eastern (Agaratoli): wetlands and the best range for birds.
  • Burapahar: hilly forest on the western edge, quieter than the rest.

Morning or afternoon

Jeep safaris run in a morning and an afternoon slot, each about two hours. Mornings have softer light, cooler air and more animals moving. Elephant safaris start at first light and last about an hour; the exact slot is fixed the day before.

How to book safely

Book through the Assam government's official online service, or ask your hotel or tour operator to book for you. Many private websites look official but charge extra or simply resell slots. Entry fees and vehicle charges are set by the forest department and revised each season, so check the current rate when you book.

On the day

  • Carry the same photo ID used for the booking.
  • Wear muted colours, and keep your voice down.
  • Bring a jacket for winter mornings in the open jeep.
  • Stay in the vehicle at all times; the animals are wild.
