Kaziranga National Park: season, safaris and how to get there
Assam5 min read

The short answer
Kaziranga is usually open from October or November to April or May and closes for the monsoon. It is about 200 km from Guwahati, a four-and-a-half to five-hour drive. Book jeep safaris for early morning, and spend two nights to see more than one range.
Why go
Kaziranga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to about two-thirds of the world's greater one-horned rhinos, along with wild elephants, water buffalo, swamp deer and a large tiger population. The grassland and wetland make sightings far more likely than in most forest parks.
When it is open
The park closes during the monsoon, when the Brahmaputra floods it. It usually reopens in stages from October or November and closes again by May. Check the forest department's announcement for exact dates each year.
Ranges and safaris
Jeep safaris run in the Central (Kohora), Western (Bagori), Eastern (Agaratoli) and Burapahar ranges. Central is the most popular, Western is known for rhinos, and Eastern for birds. Morning safaris have the best light and the most animals.
Getting there
Drive from Guwahati via Nagaon on NH 27 and NH 715. The Mahamrityunjay Temple near Nagaon makes a good stop on the way. Jorhat airport is about two hours from the eastern side.
